It's been a while since I've done a #fridayintroductions post. So hey, I'm Jamie Dana. I don't take myself too seriously, as you can see 👆😂 First, a little about me. I am a hairstylist who works behind the chair 3 days a week and the other days, I work from home as an educator to fellow hairstylists. I specialize in teaching hairstylists how to brand themselves on Instagram and how to use social m
Do you ever have that client who’s hair is SO soft and healthy, but it won’t hold a curl or get any texture? The secret is, you have to add texture into the hair first, then it will do what you want. My client had this exact problem and I knew that if I put a braid into her hair and tried to pull it out to make it fuller, it would fall apart or not be as full as I wanted. So I sprayed @biolage RA
Today was a productive day. I spent all day working on my computer in my pjs. The majority of the day, I spent completely updating and creating two lessons in my online course Oh Hot GRAM. The two lessons are all about Instagram videos and how you can use videos to grow your following and create tons of engagement on your page. I have to say, it's one of my favorite lessons inside the course now
The other day I got to play around with @annie_sullivan's gorgeous hair 😍 Her hair doesn't hold a curl super well, but I wanted to see how beachy we could make it. So I sprayed in @biolage RAW Texturizing Styling Spray in her hair before I curled it, then I used a 1 inch curling iron and left the ends out to keep it more messy. Her hair had tons of grit and the style held super well. This is my go
🎧 TAP FOR SOUND 🎧 I wanted to share my technique for doing a balayage on dark hair. My client has super straight and sleek hair that doesn’t tease very well. So in order to tease before I painted her foiliage pieces, I used a fine tool comb and I used a clip to secure the teased section so it wouldn’t fall into my painting section. I learned this from someone on Instagram, but I don’t quite remem
Sometimes when I'm working, I get a very serious face. Or when I'm really concentrating, I stick my tongue out 🙈 It'd be funny to install a camera on my station to see what else I do that I don't realize haha! Are there any weird habits you do while you're working? Or am I the only one 😂
And on the 8th day, God made coffee ☕ 😂👍 So thankful for this sweet nectar. Brewing my first cup as we speak. Unfortunately, because I'm super sensitive to caffeine and it makes my anxiety go through the roof, I have to have decaf everything 👎 But at least, I still get the faux feeling of drinking coffee 🤣 What's your favorite coffee drink?! Mine is a vanilla latte. I know, so basic.
My husband and I just got back from a quick camping trip over the weekend. When I decided to work only 3 days in the salon, I knew it would allow me to have freedom to take small trips on the weekends if we wanted. It's so good and necessary to get away and take some time to recharge. We didn't have service pretty much all weekend, so I ended up reading an entire book. Now if you know me, I don't
I love when my clients get engaged so I can show off their new bling while I'm taking their hair photos 💍 We wanted to do a fun style on my client after her appointment, so I used @biolage RAW Texturizing Styling Spray in her hair to give it some beachy grit and give her a more natural, lived-in look. I feel like this style totally fits her ✌️ #ad #biolage #liveraw
It's finally starting to feel like fall here in Southern California and I'm okay with that. It took everything in me to not play Christmas music at the salon yesterday, but I had a feeling @annie_sullivan or my clients might kill me 🙈 Are there any other crazies out there who are ready to start decorating and singing Christmas Carols? 🤷♀️
If you're one of my clients, please go read the most recent post over on @pinandplaitstudio's page, it's for you 💓 If you're a hairstylist, I just wrote a blog post all about Raising your Prices + Charging your Worth. Today, I'm implementing a price increase in my business and trust me, it's not easy at all. Price increases are scary, but they are very necessary. I think as hairstylists it's eas
Yesterday @annie_sullivan and I went on a photo excursion to take some photos for social media. We didn't hire a photographer, we just took photos of each other. We found a place, made a plan, and went out and did it. I hear a lot of stylists make the excuse that they don't have good photos of themselves to post on Instagram, so they don't. I've shared this multiple times before, but you HAVE to
Inspiration comes from many places. This is our inspiration board we have in the back room of the salon. It keeps us inspired and fuels our creativity throughout the day. It's also fun because clients sometimes sneak a peek of it and it always captures their interest. Do you have something like this in your backroom or your suite?
🎧 TAP FOR SOUND 🎧 I get a lot of questions about how I do the front of my balayage, so I thought I’d make a quick video showing my process. I usually do 3 of these foils in the front all within 1 inch of the hair line. I do the same thing on the sides as well. This has been the best way for me to get consistent blonding around the hairline and I don’t have to go back in and smudge the root. How do
Good vibes only because it's the weekend ✌️ I love this fun style we did on Amanda earlier this week. I used @biolage RAW Smoothing Styling Milk to smooth out her hair while we blow dried it, then I sprayed in @biolage RAW Texturizing Styling Spray to give her some grit to her style. Then I added some curls and threw it up into a half bun. This is the perfect style for second day hair. #ad #biolag
Get that Michael Buble playlist ready, it’s time to start talking about the holidays! And more specifically Holiday Gifts for your clients! Okay, I realize that talking about Holiday Gifts at the end of October kind of makes me one of those people that have their Christmas tree up three months in advance with holiday music blasting and entirely covered in glitter 🤷♀️ But for real, the end of Oct
One of the favorite parts of my salon is my backbar. I got these Amber Bottles online and I put all our shampoo and conditioners in them to keep it clean and make everything look uniform. In order to keep them State Board compliant, I just crated small labels and put them on the back to say what's in them. Cheating the system 😜 But I think they look great and add that pop of depth to the backbar.
*long post alert* I want to let you know that there was a time where Instagram was super overwhelming to me. It can be hard to see everyone’s perfect pages and thousands of followers and think, I am NEVER going to get there. I’ve had those feelings many times before. What you don’t know about those pages is the behind the scenes… Maybe they used to be a photographer so it comes easier to them Ma
Today is going to be a fun and busy day! I'm heading out to @salon1506 for a cutting class by @shannelmariano! I'm so excited learn how to cut hair better and to get to learn alongside my assistant @annie_sullivan makes it even better! Then afterwards, I'm coming home to finish up some work at home and tonight the doors to Oh Hot GRAM close! I probably won't be opening the doors for a while, so i
Thursday night's class went SO amazing! We had so many incredible people show up and we got a tons of great feedback about the class 💓 If you haven't caught the replay yet, make sure to set aside some time to watch it because it's only available until Monday night. This is the last time I'm going to teach this class until the new year, so don't miss it! Now I'm getting ready to head into the salo
I'm going to be honest, it is a lot harder to grow your Instagram following than it used to be a year ago. Back in the day, you could get reposted and get a ton of followers. There was less competition and people were more likely to follow other pages. Now people are way more picky with who they choose to follow and in fact, people are more likely to unfollow a page rather than follow a new page.
A lot of you guys have been asking when I'm bringing my online class back again and I'm so excited to say that, I'm teaching a FREE Instagram class this Thursday, Oct 19th at 6pm PST! So if you've been wanting to take one of my Instagram classes, now is your chance! I only teach this free class every couple months and I probably won't be teaching it again until after the new year 😱 Plus, I actuall
I've been on Pinterest for the last couple days pinning ideas for a possible big project that might be coming up in the next couple months. Nothing official, just dreaming away 😍 But as I've been on there, I realized what my current favorite decor style is right now. It's called Modern Southwest Decor...who knew that was a thing?! Think Joshua Tree, Arizona, New Mexico, and Mid Century Modern 🌵 I
My assistant @annie_sullivan is engaged 💍🎉😍 I came into work on Friday and that morning, before work, she was getting her branding photos taken by @kelseyalbright. So when I got to the salon, they asked if I could be Annie's model for a few photos. As Annie was pretend curling my hair, she asked if I noticed anything different about her. At first, all I was thinking was that she was wearing lashes
When the hair, lighting, and style is just perfect 👌 I did this beautiful balayage today and I filmed some of the steps to share with you guys. I love how much you guys are enjoying the videos, so my goal is to create more videos for you. Is there anything in particular you'd want to see?
Have you guys seen the new Rose Gold foil from @framarint?! I'm obsessed with it and not just because it matches my hair perfectly! I may or may not have had some input on this new color 😜 But for real, every single one of my clients looks amazing when we do their foils now 💁♀️ This is totally not an ad, I just love their products! #rosegoldeverything
In case you haven't heard, the doors to @ember_retreat registration are opening TOMORROW at 9am PST! But only for those who are on the waitlist. We only have 30 spots available and the waitlist is over 6x that right now. We're going to be sending out an email a little later today with some more info and a surprise! @piperdeyoung and I are so excited for this retreat and we can't wait to connect
I love this little device in my hand because it allows me to connect with people all over the world in a matter of seconds. It allows me to create friendships and relationships I would have never had the chance to have otherwise. I'm so thankful for our hair community and the awesome people I've met along the way. One of my goals this next year, is to try to connect with more people in person too
I just got home from basically two weeks of travel and I'm so thankful that I get to do that as my job! I'm also thankful to be home and back working on the business I have here. In the next couple weeks, I have some super exciting stuff coming up. Like really exciting! I'm announcing a few things, I have some new blog posts coming out (yes, I said blog 😉), and I'm ready to start gearing up for t
🎧 TURN ON SOUND TO HEAR HOW-TO 🎧 A quick 5 min style for dirty hair days. Do you ever have a day where you just don't want to wash your hair? You mean like everyday?! 😂 This is a quick style you can do on days when you just want to sleep in 5 mins longer and skip washing your hair 🙌 I used @kenraprofessional Volume Dry Shampoo to absorb oils and give my hair texture and their Hi-def Matte Hairspr
Worked one day in the salon this week in between my trips. Now I'm off to San Antonio in the morning to teach at @armstrongmccallofficial and @cosmoprofbeauty's World Fair Show. I'm teaching an Instagram for Hairstylists class on Sunday at 2:30pm and a class on Monday at 11:30am. If you're going to be there, I'd love to meet you! . . . . . #jamiedanahairstylist #jamiedanaeducation #jamiedanatravel
A few weeks ago, I filmed a tutorial on how to do this mini space buns hairstyle for when you have dirty hair. I'm going to share the full tutorial tonight. It's super easy to do and only takes like 5 mins! Stay tuned for the tutorial later ✌️
Sometimes you just gotta shake your hair ✌️ I just got back from New York and what an amazing trip it was! Now I'm working for a few days and then I'm off to San Antonio for @armstrongmccallofficial and @cosmoprofbeauty's World Fair Show. These are my last two work trips for the year and I'm kinda okay with that. It's fun to travel and see the country, but it can be exhausting at the same time. I
This weekend I got to speak in front of an amazing group of people at #LBPidealogue. I have to say, it was a major highlight of my career. I want to say thank you to @lbp for asking me to be a speaker and allowing me the honor to speak next to such incredible artists to share my message. I also want to say thank you to @tomseeberger who helped me formulate my speech and who has been so influenti
I haven't posted a blonde in a while which is funny because most of my clients are blonde. I love when new clients come to me wanting to be a softer blonde. I specialize in creating beautiful blonde tones that grow out with a minimal root line. The secret to a minimal line of demarcation is doing finer highlights throughout and babylights around the face. Even though I'm doing finer pieces, it doe
I'm ready to have a great day in the salon today! I have a color correction I'm super excited about (when was the last time I said that?!) and a few other clients, and then after work, I'm packing for New York! I can't believe it's already here! By the way, does anyone have any tips for not getting wrinkles in your clothes when you pack? I heard wrapping your wrinkle prone items in silk pillow ca
Thank you guys SO much for all the birthday comments! You are all so amazing and I'm so thankful for such an incredible community to be surrounded with! Today, I'm spending the day making the final preparations for my trip and finishing up any work that needs to be done before I leave. Then tomorrow I work a long day in the salon and Saturday morning we leave bright and early for New York! I'm s
If you're on my email list, you would know that today is my birthday. I turned 25, so now I can officially rent a car 🙈 I love birthdays because they make us reflect on our year all the while getting presents! Could there be a better day? But honestly, if you’ve been following along for a while, you know how much I love to reflect on accomplishments as well as putting intention and attention to
🎧 TAP TO HEAR TECHNIQUE 🎧 For this client, I decided to mix it up and do a mixture of open air balayage (which I hardly ever do) and foiliage. She wanted to add some dimension to her virgin hair, but didn't want to be too light blonde. I wanted to add different tones in her hair. By using two different techniques and lighteners simultaneously, you can achieve that all at once. First, I started wi
One of my favorite parts of my salon is my black wall. It used to be white for the first 6 months, but I felt like it needed a punch of something, so I decided to paint it black. I was a little afraid at first to make such a bold choice, but I'm so glad I did! Once we painted it, everything came together. I added a vintage rattan chair, some plants, and macrame piece. This is now my favorite corne
